I think state is pretty stable, you really need to mess up to get fired. With everything, have to weigh the pros and cons.

You mean an interview? know about the town, do your research on different events and areas-make yourself stand out with information other people might not bother to look up. Have a personality, people within the department are looking to hire someone that will fit well-not just a robot.

I scored 76.2 for East Hanover- Statewide ALL DEPARTMENT

I'd say you'd have to get your score up. I scored a 99.2 a few years ago and only got certs from 5 agencies.
