The Department of Public Safety (http://publicsafety.princeton.edu/) (DPS) is the primary department charged with creating a safe and secure environment at Princeton University (https://www.princeton.edu/). DPS operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is comprised of 120 staff members. The department consists of professional university police, non-sworn security officers, dispatchers and administrators dedicated to providing best-in-class service to the community. DPS was awarded Law Enforcement Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) in July 2015 and reaccredited in 2018. CALEA serves as the “International Gold Standard for Public Safety Agencies” and oversees a rigorous accreditation process. DPS was also recognized by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP) and awarded law enforcement accreditation in March 2019.
The Training Coordinator (TC) is an exempt non-sworn DPS administrator who reports directly to the Administrative Lieutenant. The TC is responsible for coordinating and directing a number of DPS administrative functions. This includes, managing the Department’s training program; processing overtime assignments for details, specialized research projects, as well as writing and producing reports for various Department projects as assigned.
DPS is a 24/7, 365-day operation and may require the TC to work a flexible schedule. The TC must be able to respond to serious campus emergency operations to assist the Core Team and provide DPS support activities. The schedule will be Monday – Friday, 12:00pm – 8:00pm.


The TC will support the designing, coordinating and delivering internal and external learning solutions comprised of traditional classroom training, module web-based training, e-learning and support materials. The TC will develop a consistent learning experience that supports all DPS employees, aligns with organizational strategic objectives and meets all mandated training guidelines including, but no limited to the:
• Attorney General (AG),
• Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO),
• Environmental Health and Safety (EHS),
• Human Resources (HR), and
• Department of Public Safety (DPS) standards.

In collaboration with the Administrative Lieutenant, the TC will be responsible for researching and selecting the best platform to develop, deliver training materials and to track training hours by employee and unit. This position requires staying current with cutting edge adult learning methods and working with supervisors in each unit (Patrol, the Communication Center, Firestone Library, the Art Museum and administrative staff) to identify the training needs of their area and to recommend training programs to support their success. Once the supervisor finalizes the training needed, the TC should arrange and schedule the training.

The Training Coordinator must be able to handle the following responsibilities with minimal supervision:
• Maintain records of courses offered, attendance during local training activities, and issue certificates to acknowledge successful completion of training programs.
• Electronically scan and file copies of completed training courses that staff members have successfully completed.
• Maintain annual training calendar and ensure department completes various mandatory training requirements of the Department, University, County, and State, as well as meet the accreditation standards for CALEA and NJSACOP.
• Knowledge of teaching principles, methods, tools and techniques, and their application to law enforcement training programs.
• Knowledge of principles, methods, and problems involved in planning, organization, and administration of law enforcement training.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Serve as a liaison with various University departments to arrange required training.
• Serve as a liaison with local, state and federal agencies on training activities.
• Maintain relationships with third party vendors and outside instructors.
• Will be required to learn various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the Department.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
• Prepare and implement periodic examinations designed to measure participants’ knowledge in specific subjects and maintain records of results and findings.
• Prepare and implement training surveys to evaluate and critique training to determine effectiveness of training course, instruction method and supplemental material and training aides, as well as receive general feedback.
• Prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports on training programs and activities containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Plan and develop orientation classes for new employees, and provide on-boarding assistance.
• Prepare required forms to report new appointments of law enforcement officers to New Jersey Police Training Commission and verify no training deficiencies exist, or what requirements must be satisfied for employment.
• Assist firearms staff with the planning, scheduling, and record keeping for periodic firearms qualifications.
• Schedule facilities, equipment and necessary materials; select audiovisual material to be used; and invite other experts in the field to give lectures and presentations.
• Confer with administration to devise plans and identify needs within the department to further the training and competence of staff.
• Maintain various types of records and files.
• Track courses taught by DPS staff.
• Work with department partners (SOM & Dispatch) to administer an in-house security officer training program to track progress and development of non-sworn staff.
• Electronically and/or manually receive and process requests for elective training.
• Schedule and notify staff of upcoming training, as well as log training in department scheduling software.
• Collect course catalogs from various police academies.
• Develop training matrix for tracking officer’s professional development and ensuring they are introduced to advanced concepts or specialized training opportunities appropriate for their current assignment or length of service.
• Develop and maintain lesson plans for internal DPS training topics.
• As part of the administrative team research, develop and manage special projects outside of training that are assigned. Examples include recruitment, retention, and onboarding.
• Uploading training materials into PowerDMS and monitor the completion process.
• Create training certificates when necessary.

• Co-ordinate with the Associate Director of Support Service, their designee and their assistant for Overtime (OT) assignments
• Check OT bins for pending assignments.
• File OT after it has been awarded
• Learn and consistently implement applicable fairness rotation(s) for FOP and SPFPA and to apply the posting matrix – police vs. EST vs. security
• Work collectively with patrol supervision when assigning OT
• Must understand the process and policies associated with OT management.
• Ability to answer questions by email or text off-hours due to conflicts in OT assignments.
• Must be able to:
• Work with the LTs and on-duty supervisors when needed to assign mandatory assignments
• Assign all voluntary OT assignments according to policy
• Go through several online POSS web training
• Address last minute OT details and get them fully staffed
• Answer questions pertaining to OT jobs that have been assigned
• Multitask, assigning multiple jobs with multiple officers and to remain focused
• Understand and interpret collective bargaining agreements.
• Collect and maintain OT and event data

• Bachelor's degree or two years equivalent professional experience
• Ability to master technology in the development and delivery of training
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of:
o Police records management principles, practices and methods
o City, State and Federal laws, codes and regulations governing police records management
o Personal computers, hardware and software including POSS, PowerDMS, databases, Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
o Police department policies and procedures
• Demonstrated skill in:
o Compiling and maintaining complex and extensive records
o Applying Police records management laws, rules and regulations
o Effective oral and written communication
o Prioritizing a high volume of work
o Preparing accurate reports
o Data entry
• Planning and coordinating multiple projects
• Working under significant time constraints and pressure to meet deadlines.
• Must possess excellent:

o Judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential matters
o Interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism
o Oral and written communication skills
• Must successfully complete a background check
