“Horrendous rotating 12s”. What’s their schedule like? How does it breakdown
They work a pitman which breaks down to, 2 on 2 off, 3 on 2 off, 2 on 3 off. 0600-1800 or 1800-0600 (every other weekend off in other words.) What I wouldn't like personally is that they switch between nights and days every 3 weeks.

That’s what I would hate to. A lot of municipal do that switching between nights and days. Sounds very unpleasant. Are u in a municipality?

I'm a municipal guy, yes. My department does a modified pitman but we bid on steady shifts.

Wow, that’s awesome. Most municipal I’ve heard of do the rotating shifts. You lucked out there. Part of the appeal of Parole and sheriffs is that they have way more stable schedules.

I did luck out, my department is amazing. I'm by no means working a cozy Monday-Friday 9-5 and guys with families would love Sheriff/Parole. If you're single pitman or 4x4 (rare) schedule's are about the best you're going to get with a piece of the weekend starting off as a boot.

So if you had a few months on the job, and wanted to go to NJSP, are you already a good enough candidate, or would it be better to have at least a few years on the job first before going to NJSP?

Unfortunately I am aware that I’d have to redo the academy again for some reason.

Depends on your background and what your supervisors say about you. Some departments are hesitant to hire someone with a few years on the job because it's harder to mold you into the type of cop they want you to be.

And what about a few months in?

SP hire people with no law enforcement experience so I doubt they worry too much if you are coming in with months vs years. For me, doing another academy wouldn't be high on my list of things to do that's for sure.
