Anyone have any insight on this alternate route process? 1 or 2 academy classes per year? How many will they take? Thanks for the help.

Very fair process. They hold a list for 2 years so everyone has a fair chance. As far as how many classes they put through I wouldn’t be able to tell you. But alternate route is the way to go. Good luck!

What is the likelihood that an alternate route candidate lands a job within a year of graduating?

Re: Union County Alternate Route Program - John H. Stamler Police Academy
The Alternate Route Program (ARP) has grown to be the preferred hiring source for more than half of the non-civil service police departments in the state. Departments actively recruit from the Alternate Route Programs at the 12 police academies running programs. Department officials go to the academies, review candidate records, and interview candidates (unsolicited) for full-time offers upon graduation. Likewise, ARP candidates are also encouraged to send out resumes while attending the academy which prompts hiring interest from departments.
The ARP processes are extremely competitive and all seem to have reasonably fair processes, so the program will likely continue to grow as the preferred source for hiring by non-civil service police departments.
The vast majority of my students who have progressed through the Alternate Route Program have been offered full-time jobs while in the academy or within two months of graduation. A few have chosen to wait for their desired to department to hire (which is always risky), so a couple waited as long as 6 months.
The Alternate Route Program is definitely worth looking into regardless of which county you live within. No residency preferences are used in any of the selection processes.
