I just received 2 certs from Essex County Corrections and Kearny PD with both cert positions below 20. I’m aiming for Newark PD so my question is should I still respond to Kearny and county corrections even though I don’t want it or just respond to both in case Newark doesn’t certify me?... or wait for Newark?

Hey congratulations on getting your certs. I got this information from CCS Test Prep. If you wish to defer the cert you can write something like this...

"I am responding to Certification #_________. At this time, I would like to defer my consideration for the position of police officer to the next certification by the ___________ police department. I respectfully request to remain active on the list for any future certifications."

If you wish to accept the cert I would write it in the same style as the example above, but obviously you would have to change some things.

By the way, if you have no problem doing corrections or police I would accept both certs. You can accept both and then it would just be a matter of waiting which department gets back to you first. Hope this helps.

so do you think it would be smart to defer if you have scored 99.87 and are number 16 on the cert. since im a non vet would i be beat out by all the vets on this cert? I dont understand how vet pref works. what do you think the best option would be?

If you send a letter accepting a cert does that take you off of the the lis for other departments? I don't want to accept a cert for a town and have that disqualify me from getting a cert from others because if i am not chosen then that just delays the process entirely.
